This bizarre French customer habit is driving shop owners crazy
Iconic bags are becoming less attainable, prices of fragrances are skyrocketing. Yet, a new trend allows you to keep wearing your favorite scent without breaking the bank.
For a long time, designer bags were seen as the ultimate fashion trophy. Nowadays, their four-figure price tags render them unattainable for many. In search of a touch of the grand fashion houses’ aura, people are turning to another emblem: fragrance. Wearing Chanel N°5, Miss Dior, or La Vie Est Belle offers a slice of fantasy, a personal luxury that’s instantly recognizable. Just a few drops are enough to define a style. Fragrance has become the new “it-bag”: less visible but equally prestigious. It also serves as an emotional sanctuary where one can project their style, memories, and femininity.
However, the issue is that their prices have soared. In six years, some iconic scents have seen dramatic increases: Chanel N°5 by 32%, Miss Dior by 29%, and about 20% for La Vie Est Belle, according to figures reported by BFMTV. Nowadays, spending over 150 euros for a bottle is no longer exceptional. Several factors contribute to this surge. In Grasse, flower harvests are threatened by climate change, increasing raw material costs. New European regulations on allergens also require brands to reformulate some of their products, adding additional costs. Lastly, brands are adopting a premiumization strategy: like leather goods, perfume is becoming a standalone luxury product.
Yet, it’s hard to resist. Nearly 80% of consumers are willing to pay more for a fragrance they fall in love with, according to industry data cited by Capital. The market remains vibrant: according to the research firm Circana, perfume sales continue to grow in value despite the price hikes, proving that it remains a priority pleasure purchase. A fragrance isn’t just bought for its scent; it provides reassurance, comfort, and confidence. In sometimes gloomy everyday life, it represents that little extra soulful indulgence we allow ourselves, even when budgets tighten.
So, how can you continue to wear your beloved fragrance without feeling guilty at checkout? The answer is simple: switch to smaller sizes. Rather than always opting for the 100ml, more and more people are choosing 30ml, 50ml, or travel sizes. According to Circana, these smaller sizes are showing growth rates up to five times higher than larger ones. More affordable and easier to fit into a bag, they allow you to stay loyal to your signature scent without spending too much all at once.
Perfume might be the new luxury bag. But in times of inflation, it’s chosen in mini size: a chic and pragmatic reflex, perfectly in tune with the times.
