When Anne-Marie Strickland welcomed Mr. Wags into her home, she quickly realized he wasn’t the cuddly, affectionate pet most people hope for. Instead, the 12-year-old Papillon mix was distant, wary of human contact, and carried the emotional scars of a difficult past. But rather than turn him away, Anne-Marie and her family chose to love him unconditionally, understanding that his past experiences had shaped the dog he had become.

A Difficult Beginning

Rescued in Latrobe, Australia, Mr. Wags had spent much of his life neglected. Deprived of basic medical care and affection, he had withdrawn into himself, often reacting with aggression. “He was very angry,” Anne-Marie recalled in an interview. But beneath his tough exterior, she saw a soul deserving of kindness.

Despite his guarded nature, Anne-Marie remained patient. She and her family knew that trust couldn’t be rushed. They provided Mr. Wags with the stability he had never known, offering him warmth, comfort, and the freedom to heal at his own pace.

A Feisty Reputation

Mr. Wags quickly became famous—or perhaps infamous—among local veterinarians. His fiery personality made every visit an adventure. “He became a bit of a folk hero at the vet’s office,” Anne-Marie shared, laughing. But as time passed and he received the treatment he needed, including dental care and treatment for a skin condition, his behavior softened.

At home, small changes became evident. Though he never fully embraced cuddles, he would follow Anne-Marie everywhere, a silent yet powerful expression of his trust. He also took to sleeping on the pillow next to hers, a quiet acknowledgment of the bond they had built.

A Loving Goodbye

For Anne-Marie, Mr. Wags was never meant to be a perfect pet—he was simply perfect for her. No matter how tough he could be, she loved him without hesitation. Unfortunately, as he aged, his health declined, and she had to make the heartbreaking decision to let him go.

“He left this world in my arms,” she said, grateful that he never had to face loneliness again. For Anne-Marie, there was solace in knowing she had given Mr. Wags the love and dignity he had been denied for so long.

A Story of Unconditional Love

Not every pet arrives with a clean slate. Some come with wounds, fears, and a history that makes trust difficult. But as Anne-Marie’s story shows, love and patience can transform even the most guarded hearts. Mr. Wags may have never been the cuddliest dog, but he was loved deeply—and that made all the difference.
