Father’s Day has been celebrated since the Middle Ages, and this year it falls on Sunday, June 21. On this occasion, explore our array of ideas to delight your dad.

While it may be overshadowed by Mother’s Day, Father’s Day truly deserves to be spotlighted. What are the roots of this tradition? Why is it celebrated in June? And most importantly, how can you uniquely surprise your dad, steering clear of the perennial cliché of ties or personalized mugs? From historical origins to inspiring gift ideas, let’s delve into a celebration that’s more than meets the eye.

When is Father’s Day in 2026?

Annually, Father’s Day is observed on the third Sunday of June in France, like in over 80 countries globally. In 2026, it will be celebrated on Sunday, June 21. However, it’s marked a week earlier in Belgium, on June 14, and on June 7, 2026, in Switzerland. Italians and Spaniards pay tribute to their fathers on March 19, following a religious tradition. Other European neighbors like Germany, Luxembourg, Austria, and the Scandinavian countries have their own varied dates, ranging from May to November.

Gift Ideas to Present to Dad

To pamper your dad according to his hobbies, opt for a tangible gift that reflects his personality: if he’s sporty, consider a breathable technical outfit or a smartwatch to track his performances; if he prefers elegance, a woody fragrance like Terre d’Hermès or the new Cerruti Vivo Elixir, or even a fine leather wallet will always make an impression. Gourmet dads will melt for a Japanese chef’s knife or a bottle of rum, while Sunday adventurers will appreciate an ergonomic hiking backpack or a gardening kit… Lastly, if your dad enjoys comfort or is a bit of a geek, gift him the ultimate comfort of a noise-canceling headset or an e-reader, and don’t forget to include a handwritten note—the most precious of keepsakes. Of course, let’s not forget new dads with a personalized gift like a book featuring him as the hero alongside his child, or a photo book capturing all the family moments or his recent travels.

What is the Origin of Father’s Day?

Father’s Day has been celebrated since the Middle Ages, originally on March 19, St. Joseph’s Day, as a Christian feast dedicated to Jesus’s father. It wasn’t until 1952 that it became a secular celebration in France, now set on the third Sunday of June, and this change occurred twelve years after Mother’s Day was established! It was a French lighter manufacturer (Flaminaire brand) who initiated this, taking inspiration from the United States where this “commercial” holiday had existed since 1910. The advertising slogan at that time proclaimed: “Our dads have told us, for Father’s Day, they all want a Flaminaire“. Indeed, in the first half of the 20th century, it was common to give fathers gifts related to tobacco consumption: cigarette cartons, pipes, or lighters… Two years later, this celebration was officially recognized by the government, fixing it on the third Sunday of June.
