The creator of Goop portrays the diminishing star Kay Stone in Josh Safdie’s film “Marty Supreme,” a role that required her to revisit her acting skills while minimizing her usual glamorous appearance.
Kyra Panchenko, a makeup artist who collaborated with Safdie on “Uncut Gems,” shared with Page Six Style that Safdie prefers a minimal makeup look on camera. Although the movie is set in the 1950s—a time when bold makeup was the norm—Panchenko had to opt for “very sheer,” natural-looking products instead.
Panchenko mentioned, “We tried to conceal her Los Angeles tan to make her appearance more neutral for the role.”
Minimal Makeup Moments
There are scenes in the film where Paltrow, aged 53, appears completely without makeup. In a particularly revealing scene, she is seen fresh from a shower, barefaced and with wet hair, alongside Chalamet.
Panchenko recalls, “[Paltrow said,] ‘Okay, I trust Josh.’ It’s wonderful that Josh envisioned it this way because it adds a layer of vulnerability. Her bare face and messy hair really brought depth to that scene.”
To prepare Paltrow’s skin, Panchenko used facial massages and, naturally, Goop skincare products, which Panchenko confirms Paltrow genuinely enjoys using.
The minimal makeup approach wasn’t exclusive to Paltrow; Safdie also instructed Panchenko to apply a lighter makeup look on Fran Drescher.
“He insisted that she wear very light makeup and look completely different from her character on ‘The Nanny,'” Panchenko explained. “He wanted the audience to question whether it was indeed Fran.”
Unlike Paltrow, Drescher was hesitant about appearing onscreen without makeup.
“As we listened to him, she said, ‘Okay… but I would like a little eyebrow,'” Panchenko reminisced.
Makeup Headlines
The film’s makeup choices have gained attention this awards season, especially Chalamet’s faux acne scars, which were so convincingly done that Paltrow offered him skincare advice.
“She was amazed by the realism of the makeup and thought it was genuine,” Panchenko noted, considering it a significant compliment.
Mike Fontaine, an Oscar nominee for his work on “Sinners,” created the lifelike prosthetics that Panchenko then adapted to alter Chalamet’s appearance.
“The film’s close-up shooting style required impeccable prosthetics that seamlessly integrated with his skin,” she explained.
Fontaine crafted individual prosthetic pieces from a mold of Chalamet’s face, focusing on enhancing his jawline rather than his midface, based on the actor’s preferences.
Panchenko also thickened Chalamet’s eyebrows, giving him a unibrow to transform his appearance further from the typically handsome lead to something more rugged.
Using wig glue and a precision $10 eyebrow pen, she meticulously altered his eyebrows and mustache.
The transformation process was intense, involving daily shavings and detailed prosthetic applications, all within an hour. Chalamet even wore vision-obscuring contacts, adding to his character’s altered appearance.
“It was challenging for him, but it significantly contributed to his character by making his eyes appear smaller,” Panchenko shared.
Handling prosthetics during physically demanding scenes presented its challenges, which Panchenko mitigated using simple solutions like Vaseline body oil to maintain the skin’s condition.
With “Marty Supreme” up for nine Oscars, including best picture and best actor for Chalamet, the film is set to be a highlight of the awards ceremony.
