This bizarre French customer habit is driving shop owners crazy
A timeless ingredient is making a comeback in natural hair care routines — and it’s outperforming many modern shampoos.
Long before the era of pearlescent bottles and silicone-infused formulas, a fruit from Asia was already creating suds for beautiful hair. This forgotten ingredient, a natural treasure used for centuries to cleanse hair without damage, deserves a closer look.
Native to India and Nepal, the Sapindus mukorossi produces small shells rich in saponins, natural cleaning agents. Since ancient times, Ayurvedic medicine has praised them for purifying the scalp and adding shine and suppleness. Far from modern detergents, they remove impurities without stripping the hair fiber: the sebum remains balanced, the cuticle is sealed, and light is reflected. The result is a soft, authentic shine, without any greasiness. These magical little shells? They’re known as soap nuts, or reetha.
To use them, make a homemade decoction. Simply boil a handful of soap nuts (or just the shells) in a half-liter of water for 10 minutes, then let it cool. The resulting liquid, slightly viscous and foamy, is applied to wet hair like a traditional shampoo. A gentle massage and a rinse with clean water leave hair clean, flexible, and silky. Some add a spoonful of amla or shikakai powder for an even more restorative effect. The decoction can be stored for about a week in the refrigerator in an airtight container. For daily use, you can also grind the dry nuts into powder and mix them directly with warm water before application. The advantage? No stripping, no hair getting greasy too quickly: soap nuts cleanse just right, without disrupting the natural balance of the scalp. Hair quickly adjusts, returning to its natural rhythm and texture.
This ancient secret is finding its way back into natural routines. Soap nuts are now available on organic and zero-waste websites, as well as at Aroma-Zone, offered in bags of whole nuts from organic farming. The price? About 11 euros per kilo, enough to prepare several months of home treatments.
Clearly, true luxury sometimes isn’t found in a bottle, but in a simple, ancient practice. Soap nuts remind us: when nature is allowed to work, hair shines by itself.
