The legendary singer marked the 40th anniversary of her film “Desperately Seeking Susan” by reviving a famous item from the movie’s wardrobe.
Madonna, aged 66, took to Instagram this past Monday to celebrate both International Transgender Day of Visibility and the significant anniversary of her debut film by showcasing the distinctive pyramid-embroidered jacket she donned in the 1985 movie.
“Happy Trans Visibility Day!! And Happy 40th anniversary of my first film – Desperately Seeking Susan!! This weekend we celebrated by attending the fashion show titled MOTHER-DAUGHTER-HOLY SPIRIT!!” she captioned on Instagram, accompanied by a slideshow featuring other celebrities like trans model Alex Consani and Julia Fox. “All proceeds will benefit the Trans Justice Funding Project! Thank you to everyone who supported this cause.”
The 1950s-style blazer, selected by costume designer Santo Loquasto, plays a pivotal role in “Desperately Seeking Susan”; it leads to Rosanna Arquette’s character being mistaken for Madonna’s character after she puts it on.
The same jacket also features in Madonna’s music video for “Into the Groove.”
However, according to a CNN interview with the film’s director, Susan Seidelman, Madonna was not initially a fan of the outfit. Seidelman explained, “The pyramid jacket acts as a symbol of transformation. It’s not about Roberta turning into Madonna’s character; it’s about her becoming a stronger version of herself. She’s not quite there, but she’s on her way.”
In 2016, Julien’s Auctions sold the iconic jacket for $87,500 as part of its Music Icons collection, which also featured items from Ella Fitzgerald, Whitney Houston, Elvis Presley, and others.
For those fans with tighter budgets, an officially licensed replica is available on eBay for a lower four-figure sum, or they can purchase a costume replica on Amazon for under $200.
