This bizarre French customer habit is driving shop owners crazy
At 28, the winner of four Grand Slam titles dazzled spectators at the 2026 French Open with her couture-like, custom-designed entrance outfits. Each one was coordinated with a shimmering gold sequined tennis dress from Nike.
Osaka explained to journalists in Paris, “I’m not big on talking, so I use my clothing to express myself. This allows me to be bold in my choice of colors, patterns, and materials.”
The striking entrance outfits were the handiwork of Swiss designer Kevin Germanier. He repurposed Nike garments to craft these pieces, which he playfully tagged as “court-ure” on his Instagram.

For her opening round on Court Suzanne-Lenglen against Germany’s Laura Siegemund, Osaka showcased a black vest featuring a corset-like lace-up back and a long pleated tulle skirt over her golden dress. The dress shimmered under the Paris sun, which momentarily worried the tennis star.
“The sun reflecting off the dress was quite intense,” she commented. “I was anxious that the umpire might ask me to change, so I had two standard Nike dresses on standby just in case.”
No change was needed, however. Osaka secured a victory and later shared the inspiration behind her dress, saying, “It’s like the Eiffel Tower when it’s sparkling at night. I think I resemble that a bit,” and mentioned that the outfit was “a tribute to France and its haute couture, which I deeply admire.”
World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, who was watching the match live on TNT Sports, praised Osaka’s style, “I admire her self-expression. She’s brimming with confidence, and that’s the true beauty of fashion,” she noted.
Her opponent, however, was not as enthusiastic. “I’m here to compete in tennis, not participate in a fashion parade,” Siegemund remarked.

Osaka continued to impress in her second-round match against Croatia’s Donna Vekić on Court Simonne-Mathieu, making her entrance in a gold sequined bomber jacket complemented by an ivory train that flowed behind her. French seamstress Diana Martinez, who was involved in crafting the outfit, shared on her Instagram Story that it was the “most incredible and surreal” project she had ever done.
Before warming up, Osaka detached the train, which was connected by snaps to the jacket, and handed them to a ball kid, revealing the same gold dress underneath.
In her post-match interview, Osaka remarked, “I enjoy keeping everyone guessing. It’s all in good fun,” though she chose not to disclose if she would continue unveiling new looks in subsequent rounds.
With this win, Osaka has advanced to the third round of the French Open for the first time since 2019, where she is set to play against the 17th seed Iva Jovic.
Osaka’s fashion statements have been making waves all year. Earlier, at the Australian Open in January, she entered the Rod Laver Arena in an ensemble inspired by a jellyfish, designed by Robert Wun, complete with a veiled hat and a white parasol.
“I believe there are kids and others who see themselves in me and feel inspired by my outfits,” Osaka shared while in Paris.
