This bizarre French customer habit is driving shop owners crazy
The actress had a unique personal technique for applying her perfume.
On Friday, April 17, Nathalie Baye passed away after a struggle with Lewy body disease, leaving behind a vast cinematic legacy and the image of a cheerful, down-to-earth woman known for her profound discretion. Her approach to beauty was no different. Preferring simplicity, her skincare routine was straightforward: thorough skin cleansing, the same cream morning and night, and self-massage through pinching. “One night a week, I sleep with nothing on my face to let the skin manage itself,” she shared in a 2015 interview with Madame Figaro. For makeup, just a touch of blush and neatly defined eyebrows did the trick.
When it came to perfume, Nathalie Baye’s philosophy was equally minimalistic. She steered clear of overpowering fragrances and the trails that announce someone’s arrival. Musky, citrusy, or woody scents were all set aside. The star, who rose to fame in François Truffaut’s “Day for Night,” firmly believed, “Nothing beats the smell of clean skin.” Thus, she wore very little perfume daily. “In winter, a drop of Chanel N° 5. In summer, a bit of Caudalie Beauty Elixir,” she revealed in the interview. While not exactly a perfume, the mist emits a gentle fragrance of grape, rose, and rosemary. It can be used on the face to refresh the complexion and enhance its glow, or on the décolleté.
The rest of the time, the actress had a very personal trick for subtly scenting herself without the fragrance becoming overpowering, achieving the “clean skin” effect she cherished. She would add a drop of rose essential oil to her body lotion from either Bioderma or Esthederm. This method combined hydration with a unique, nearly imperceptible olfactory signature that was incredibly elegant. It’s a style lesson and a simple technique that easily inspires us to streamline our own routines.
In her departure, Nathalie Baye takes with her a certain vision of French elegance—characterized by restraint, intelligence, and an unassuming beauty. Her legacy, a blend of light rose and fresh soap, will continue to linger over French cinema for a long time.
