Just because social media plays a significant role in teenagers’ lives today doesn’t mean they all aspire to work in that field. Many of them have different ambitions, and they’re quite varied.

Contrary to what one might assume, not all young people today dream of becoming influencers or content creators as a career choice. Even though platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat are a big part of their daily lives, spending countless hours on them, these social media channels don’t necessarily represent a career goal for them. A recent study has shown that many still favor more traditional or meaningful careers. In 2024, the Odaxa institute surveyed over 1000 young individuals, aged 11 to 17, on behalf of Acadomia, a tutoring platform. They aimed to find out exactly “what our children dream of?”. The findings are likely to comfort many parents.

Indeed, when asked about their dream job, careers related to social media are not at the top of the list. Instead, the sciences stand out, with careers such as veterinarian (8%), doctor (6%), and engineer (5%) leading the rankings. This indicates that young people primarily seek stable, rewarding, and socially beneficial professions, far from the image of a generation obsessed with online fame.

Digging deeper, most of the young girls surveyed dream of becoming veterinarians, doctors, or teachers, while young boys see themselves more as engineers, professional soccer players, or doctors. Interestingly, the role of influencer only ranks eleventh in their job preference, a stark contrast to trends observed in other parts of the world…

Another study, this time in the United States conducted by the platform Whop among approximately 900 adolescents aged 12 to 15, explored the same topic. The result: one in five youths aspires to create video content, especially on TikTok. Careers in mobile app or video game development also generate significant interest. Clearly, the dreams of young people vary significantly across the globe!
