Scrambled, omelet, hard-boiled, soft-boiled… what’s the best way to cook eggs? Nutritionists agree: this is the cooking method to prioritize!
Eggs are a staple in our daily diet. Our English-speaking neighbors eat them every morning and they’re definitely onto something! Thanks to their high protein content, eggs provide a real feeling of fullness. This helps to stave off those mid-morning stomach rumbles and the pre-lunch munchies. Moreover, eggs are incredibly easy and quick to prepare. Cooking an egg is about as simple as it gets! But what is the best method to do so? According to nutrition experts, there’s a particular way you should be cooking them regularly for optimal health benefits.
“How would you like your eggs this morning?” asks your partner. “Any way, I love them all!” you reply. However, it’s not just a matter of taste. Indeed, how you cook the egg is crucial: it can affect how many of its valuable nutrients you can benefit from. The egg white contains proteins as well as minerals like calcium, phosphorus, and potassium. However, to reap all these benefits, there’s one condition that must be met: it needs to be thoroughly cooked. Raw, it’s indigestible, summarize the nutritionists. The yolk, on the other hand, is an excellent source of vitamins (including A, essential for skin and eye health), minerals, antioxidants, and fatty acids from the omega-3 and omega-6 families, lists dietitian nutritionist Stéphanie Drieu on France Bleu. But to benefit from it, you need to eat it runny. When cooked thoroughly, it loses a substantial amount of its nutrients and moreover, it develops bad cholesterol, points out Laurence Pinelli, a naturopath specializing in micronutrition. In summary, the egg white should be cooked and the yolk almost raw… Luckily, this isn’t hard to achieve: just prepare them soft-boiled, poached, en cocotte, or sunny side up. You can certainly have a hard-boiled egg occasionally, reassure the experts, but for daily consumption, the other methods mentioned are preferable.
In the end, it’s not just about how you like your eggs, but more importantly, how to cook them to get the most benefits. A well-cooked white and a still runny yolk: that’s the winning combination for both enjoyment and nutritional benefits. And the best part? It’s something everyone can do starting tomorrow morning.
