After enjoying the summer, are you thinking about starting a detox? Here are some tips to succeed without feeling deprived.
Summer often equates to indulging in life’s pleasures. Frequent restaurant visits, irregular sleep patterns, and a bit more alcohol than usual… As summer winds down, many of us consider undergoing a detox. The goal? To reset the body on a healthy track, clear out toxins, feel lighter, and improve overall well-being. However, detoxes are commonly associated with several misconceptions such as restrictive juice cleanses or mono-diets, which can lead to nutritional deficiencies and disrupt bodily balance. To approach detox safely, there’s a universally safe method recommended by Marie Chavanes, a nutritionist at Nutripure. Let’s dive into it.
The first thing to understand about detoxing is that our bodies are naturally equipped to handle detoxification: the liver plays a major role in various processes, including blood filtration, nutrient metabolism, and toxin elimination. Our lungs, kidneys, and digestive system also contribute to this process. “That’s why I prefer to talk about ‘returning to a healthy lifestyle’ rather than detoxing,” explains the expert. She recommends adopting a holistic approach by considering factors such as stress, sleep, nutrition, physical activity, and hydration. “The aim is to support our body’s natural internal mechanisms. I advise against consuming highly processed foods and ready-made meals, which are inflammatory and do not create favorable conditions for the body,” she continues. Instead, increase the intake of fruits and vegetables, preferably organic to maximize antioxidants, fibers, vitamins, and minerals. By balancing greens, proteins, and starches in your meals, you help your body regain a healthy framework. “This will lead to longer-lasting satiety, thus also preventing snacking throughout the day.” Ensure your meals are adequately portioned; the goal is not to create a caloric deficit which could lead to weight loss but also potential deficiencies. Indeed, detoxing doesn’t necessarily equate to losing weight! “I think it’s really more about establishing the best routine to ensure health, energy, and performance, and to maintain stamina throughout the day,” Marie Chavanes adds. And if you need a little extra help: Nutripure offers a dietary supplement called Pure Detox that supports liver function.
Alongside a balanced diet, it’s crucial to maintain good sleep habits (aiming for 7 to 8 hours per night) and to limit smoking and alcohol consumption as much as possible. “These are factors that compromise an individual’s balance and hinder their ability to achieve their goals.” Finally, commit to regular physical activity. There’s no need to hit the gym every day if that wasn’t your routine before, or to set unattainable fitness goals that might lead to discouragement. The key is kindness to oneself. Choose an activity that suits your level and watch your progress gradually unfold.
For the dietitian, there’s no secret: “It’s important to create a supportive environment with synergy between diet, exercise, daily life, and health. Consider the whole individual to address their unique needs.” Give your body about 21 days to establish a new balance and watch the positive changes begin to affect both your physical and emotional health!
