Oprah Reveals Her 1986 Oscars Gown Caused a Permanent Scar!

Oprah Winfrey shared a critical style insight from her 1986 Oscar debut.

“Comfort is key, no matter the occasion,” she explained during her appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on Wednesday evening.

She reminisced about her first Oscars, highlighting the white satin long-sleeve gown she donned for the event.

The outfit featured a heavily beaded, cape-like collar that she noted weighed about 12 pounds. “I didn’t realize you had to have it fitted before the actual event,” she stated. “When I tried to sit back, it began to choke me,” she continued, revealing, “I ended the night with a scar on my neck…seriously.”

Winfrey mimicked her posture for most of the night, holding her hand at her collarbone to keep the cumbersome collar from choking her.

During that eventful evening when Winfrey was up for an award for “The Color Purple,” she humorously told Colbert, “I heard a divine voice telling me, ‘You’re not going to win tonight because you can’t even get out of your chair.’ I couldn’t have stood up even if I wanted to.”

“Now, I don’t wear anything unless it’s comfortable,” she declared, comfortably lounging in Colbert’s chair clad in a denim jacket ($2,250) and jeans ($1,250) from Chloé.

She had previously shared this story nearly 15 years ago with Jimmy Kimmel, describing it as “one of the most dreadful nights of my life.”

“I had employed Dolly [Parton]’s dressmaker for the gown. It’s supposed to be a big deal. He came over for a fitting and returned it, but when I tried to wear it half an hour before leaving, it wouldn’t fit. My hairstylist had to lay me down on the floor and press down on my rear. I had to lie flat in the back of a limo,” she detailed, adding, “By the time I got there, everyone was already inside, and the red carpet event had ended.”
