Every couple has their ups and downs. Listening, humor, and affection are essential qualities for love to withstand the test of time. However, according to a couple who has been in love for 70 years, there is one quality that surpasses all others.

Loving each other is crucial, but so is listening, caring for one another, being tender, and affectionate. There are many rules recognized by love experts to strengthen a relationship and give it a fighting chance to last. However, for Jean and Marie, who have been married for 70 years, one quality stands out above the rest. They believe that without this quality, couples may inevitably drift apart or even separate.

Interviewed by the media outlet 20 Minutes, Jean and Marie reflect on their life together with the wisdom of decades spent side by side. Their insights are not presented in a story-like manner but as a focused discussion on their experiences and what they believe helps a couple endure through the years, changes in pace, and various life stages. Throughout their conversation, they hint at a very tangible principle that has been central to their long-lasting relationship.

In the interview, the couple discusses their relationship’s longevity as a journey that was built gradually. They emphasize the importance of continuing to communicate, not allowing misunderstandings to fester, and maintaining attentiveness to each other, even when daily life becomes overwhelming. Marie sums up this concept simply: “For us, it’s Valentine’s Day every day.” She adds, “It’s the little things that matter, much more than a Valentine’s Day gift.” They believe the strength of a relationship is built less on extraordinary moments and more on how ordinary situations are managed repeatedly over the years.

When asked what advice they would give to young couples today, Marie responds candidly: “A lot of love, understanding, and above all, patience.” When questioned about whether humor plays a role in a relationship’s longevity, she doesn’t dismiss it but refocuses on what she considers central, repeating once more: “it takes a lot of patience.” Thus, patience is the key quality for a lasting relationship according to these two soulmates.

In 2026, this patience might mean allowing your partner the time to explain their perspective without interruption, accepting that an important discussion might not be resolved immediately, and understanding that fatigue or stress can alter one’s reactions. Being patient also involves not demanding an instant response to every message, knowing when to postpone a conflict to discuss it more calmly later, and recognizing that not everything can be resolved instantly. With all this in mind, a couple can only move forward with strength and love.
