How often have you heard someone complain that teachers get too much vacation time? This sentiment is a common one among Americans, seemingly justified by the 16 weeks of vacation teachers receive each year, compared to the standard five for most other workers. Teachers’ schedules also appear more flexible than those in many other professions. However, the reality of being a teacher is quite different. Their work doesn’t end with the school bell.
This is a point many teachers try to make when confronted with such remarks. On Instagram, for example, some have spoken out about this misconception. In August 2024, Rebecca, known as @une_prof_passionnee, a high school literature teacher, posted specifically to “dispel the hard-to-shake stereotypes.” In her post, she emphasized that “the long holidays teachers have are often seen as a privilege, but in reality, they are vital for both the effective practice of our profession and our well-being.”
Have you ever considered what the daily life of a teacher looks like? They teach from Monday to Friday, all day. “Teaching is a rewarding career, but it’s also very demanding. The prolonged breaks give us a chance to recharge, maintaining a balance between our professional and personal lives,” says Rebecca. Moreover, these vacation periods are crucial for preparing the curriculum and for ongoing education. “Summer breaks allow teachers to reflect on their teaching methods, update their materials, and plan lessons tailored to their students’ needs. These months off also provide a valuable opportunity to develop new skills. Many teachers use this time to attend training sessions, keep up with the latest educational trends, or deepen their knowledge in their subject areas,” the teacher points out.
Besides, outside of summer, vacation times are often anything but restful for teachers. They dedicate these periods to lesson planning, grading assignments, and, at the end of each term, completing report cards. It’s a crucial, albeit often unrecognized, part of their job.
