Netflix’s global phenomenon, Squid Game, returned with its highly anticipated second season, but the conclusion left fans polarized. The mix of heartbreak, suspense, and unresolved storylines has sparked a lively debate. Hwang Dong-hyuk, the series’ creator, recently opened up about his bold narrative choices and shared a glimpse of what’s to come in Season 3.

A Divisive Return
After more than three years of waiting, Squid Game Season 2 debuted with only seven episodes, fewer than fans might have hoped for. While the first season captivated audiences worldwide with its razor-sharp commentary on inequality and survival, the new episodes have drawn mixed reactions. Some praised its daring evolution, while others criticized the unresolved cliffhangers and, most notably, the season’s abrupt conclusion.

Spoiler Alert: The Painful Finale
The final episode of Season 2 packed an emotional punch. Gi-hun, played by the remarkable Lee Jung-jae, faced his darkest moment as his close friend, Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan), was brutally killed by the enigmatic Front Man (Lee Byung-hun). The scene was a gut-wrenching climax, as Gi-hun’s desperate attempts to dismantle the game ended in failure. The haunting visuals of Gi-hun restrained by guards, surrounded by fallen comrades, left viewers stunned and filled with questions.
What lies ahead for characters like the courageous Hyun-ju or the less-than-noble Kang Dae-ho? Will the Front Man’s mysterious motives come to light? And what of Hwang Jun-ho, the persistent detective seeking to uncover the truth behind the game? Though a post-credits scene hints at the continuation of the games, the lack of immediate answers left many viewers both frustrated and intrigued.

Why the Cliffhanger?
In an interview with Variety, Hwang Dong-hyuk explained his decision to divide the story across two seasons. “When I was drafting the arcs for Seasons 2 and 3, the narrative became larger than I initially planned,” he said. Originally conceived as a single eight- or nine-episode season, the story expanded to over ten episodes, prompting him to rethink its structure.
The second season focuses on Gi-hun’s increasingly desperate efforts to end the games. His attempts to hire mercenaries, rally players for a rebellion, and persuade others to leave the game all end in failure. These cumulative defeats lead to the ultimate tragedy—Jung-bae’s death—marking a pivotal point in Gi-hun’s journey.
“This is where I felt it was natural to pause the story,” Hwang explained. “The weight of Gi-hun’s guilt and failure sets the stage for an entirely new chapter. Season 3 will explore how he carries this burden forward.”
What to Expect in Season 3 ?
Hwang hinted at a transformed Gi-hun in the next season. “He will not be the same man you saw in Season 2,” he revealed, adding that the upcoming episodes will show him at a crossroads, grappling with the consequences of his choices. While specific details remain under wraps, the creator promised an emotionally intense continuation.
One lingering question is the format of Season 3. Will it stick to three episodes, as previously suggested, or expand further? Fans have speculated about shorter episodes or the possibility of additional content to balance the uneven narrative pace.
The Wait Continues
For now, the only confirmed detail is a tentative 2025 release date. As fans speculate and debate, the anticipation for Squid Game Season 3 continues to build. Whether or not Hwang’s daring storytelling pays off remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the world will be watching.
With its gripping storylines, unforgettable characters, and stark social commentary, Squid Game has solidified its place as a cultural touchstone—and the next chapter promises to push boundaries even further.
