In his memoir, the iconic “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” singer discusses the deep sense of relief he felt when he finally saw a path forward after years of witnessing his wife’s health decline. Orzabal expressed that the honesty in his book comes from a place of truth and a desire to connect with others who might be facing similar challenges.
“For many years, I lived alongside Caroline’s deterioration,” Orzabal shared. “It was more than just a few months or a year. There came a point where I couldn’t handle it anymore, and a new direction became apparent to me.”
Orzabal’s life took an unexpected turn in October 2016 during a Tears for Fears concert at Red Rocks in Colorado. It was there he met Emily Rath, a writer and photographer. He recalls his immediate thought upon seeing her: “That’s my wife.” This struck him as peculiar since he was already married and Emily bore no resemblance to Caroline.
Rath was 30 years old when she met the 55-year-old Orzabal. He humorously noted the age difference, wishing the circumstances were different. Despite this, they exchanged contact information, starting off what Orzabal initially thought was a mere creative friendship. However, he later admitted that his feelings for Emily had begun to deepen even before Caroline’s passing.
Orzabal and Caroline had been together since their teenage years, marrying in 1982 in Bath, England. The couple had two sons. Before Caroline’s health issues began to dominate their lives, their marriage had already been tested by Orzabal’s long tours and increasing detachment due to his fame.
The marriage faced significant challenges by the mid-1990s, leading them to consider separation and seek marital counseling. Despite the difficulties, they remained together, determined to keep their family intact.
In the late 2000s, their life settled into a routine that increasingly involved heavy drinking. By 2011, Caroline’s behavior began to alarm their friends. Orzabal recounted how she attributed her symptoms to menopause, a claim he accepted until it became clear that the issues were persisting and worsening due to alcohol. The full extent of her condition did not become apparent to him until her autopsy.
Caroline’s health declined rapidly, characterized by anxiety, loss of appetite, and social withdrawal. Orzabal felt overwhelmed by his caregiving duties, which fueled his internal anger and frustration.
As he grew closer to Rath, Orzabal faced a pivotal decision about his future. He described reaching a “tipping point,” a moment when he had to choose between continuing his life with Caroline, who was frequently hospitalized and deeply unwell, or starting anew with someone who offered hope and health.
The decision to move on was not without guilt, especially considering the time he had spent caring for Caroline during her frequent hospital stays. Yet, he saw a different life possible with Rath and chose that path.
Caroline passed away in 2017 at the age of 54. Orzabal admitted to struggling with mixed feelings of belief and disbelief, faced with the immediate responsibilities that follow a loved one’s death.
In 2019, Orzabal sought treatment for an Ambien addiction at the InnerBalance rehab center in Colorado, where he began the process of self-forgiveness and confronting his grief.
Orzabal married Emily Rath in 2020, and the couple welcomed a daughter, Eula, in 2025. He credits Emily with being a tremendous support and believes that Caroline would have understood his decisions, considering the person she was.
Through sharing his story, Orzabal hopes to honor Caroline’s memory respectfully while also acknowledging the harsh realities they faced together, providing insight and perhaps solace to others in similar situations.
