A former Meta executive has published a memoir that tears open the company’s carefully curated image—and its CEO is doing everything possible to stop it. The book is already a bestseller, and its portrayal of Mark Zuckerberg as a ruthless, manipulative leader has triggered a storm across Silicon Valley.

A Legal Battle to Stop the Pages From Spreading

Meta has filed lawsuits in the United States and the UK in an attempt to block the release of Careless People by Sarah Wynn-Williams, who worked at Facebook (now Meta) between 2011 and 2018, rising to the role of Global Director. While U.S. courts briefly sided with Meta, British publishers have resisted, ensuring the book remains on shelves.

The effort may already be too late. The memoir has been praised by outlets like The New York Times and quickly climbed the bestseller charts in both countries.

Inside Facebook’s Corridors of Power

Drawing on her seven years at the company, Wynn-Williams describes Zuckerberg as a cynical autocrat willing to compromise ethical principles to expand Facebook’s empire.

Among her most striking claims: that Facebook was ready to cooperate with authoritarian regimes like China by allowing state censors access to its platforms. She also details the company’s push into emerging markets through Internet.org, which she portrays as a “cheap, restricted version of the internet” designed more to capture users than to empower them.

Perhaps most damning, she alleges that Facebook failed to stop—and in some ways enabled—the spread of hate speech in Myanmar, where the platform was used to coordinate sexual violence and mass killings against the Muslim Rohingya minority.

A Toxic Culture

The book also exposes the internal culture of Meta, describing a workplace rife with moral harassment, gender pressure, and even sexual misconduct. Women, Wynn-Williams writes, faced subtle but relentless discouragement from becoming mothers.

Zuckerberg himself, she claims, could be petulant and childish, reportedly demanding to win video games against staff on his private jet and lashing out when he didn’t.

The title Careless People references a line from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, likening Zuckerberg and his executives to Daisy and Tom Buchanan—powerful figures who wreck lives without remorse.

A Narrative That Hits a Nerve

Meta has called the book unfair and misleading, but the reaction suggests it has touched on widely shared concerns about power, ethics, and accountability in big tech.

For Zuckerberg, the book is more than a PR problem: it challenges his carefully cultivated image as a visionary innovator and recasts him as a reckless ruler whose pursuit of growth came at enormous human cost.

Whether lawsuits succeed or fail, the controversy has ensured that Careless People will be read—and debated—by anyone trying to understand not just Zuckerberg, but the culture that shaped one of the most influential companies on earth.
