With or without crust, whole wheat, plain, or multigrain? UFC-Que Choisir provides guidance on navigating the numerous sandwich bread options available.

When you’re too rushed to stop by the bakery, sandwich bread becomes a reliable ally. In the morning, you spread it with butter or jam after toasting it. At lunch, it becomes tasty soldiers for your soft-boiled egg, or soaks up the sauce with your fish fillet. In the evening, you dip it into a hearty homemade soup, especially when you’re out of bread (or even croutons!). However, be warned: not all sandwich breads are created equal. Some have high sugar content, while others, marketed as whole wheat, are actually made with refined flour… To help us make informed choices, UFC-Que Choisir reviewed 20 industrial sandwich bread brands, including Harrys, Auchan, U bio, Epi d’Or, and Jacquet. Here’s the brand they recommend.

At the bottom of the rankings, three plain sandwich breads were found: Simpl (Carrefour), Epi d’Or (E.Leclerc), and Mannapain (Aldi). Their drawbacks? A very high sugar content, and a nutritional contribution low in fibers and proteins, similar to that of a typical baguette. “Sandwich bread can be a significant source of sugars: up to one cube (5 grams) for just two slices,” states UFC-Que Choisir. The organization also warns against Harrys 100% Mie, marketed as “no added sugars,” which in fact has “three times more sugar than the least sugary options in our selection”. Another tip? It’s better to choose organic options, which don’t contain unhealthy emulsifiers.

Among all the brands reviewed, one stands out: La Boulangère. Several products from this Vendée-based brand are at the top of UFC-Que Choisir’s list. This includes La Boulangère’s large slice whole wheat sandwich bread with no added sugars and Bien Pain, a brand produced by La Boulangère and available in organic stores. Both secured the top spot in the ranking, each scoring 14.1/20. Their strengths? Made from whole wheat flour from organic farming, they offer a healthy nutritional profile without too much salt or added sugars.

Another La Boulangère product finished in fourth place: the rye & grains sandwich bread, scoring 13.8/20. “This is the highest score in our selection for a multigrain sandwich bread,” notes UFC-Que Choisir. Clearly, this brand from Vendée is highly recommended for its quality ingredients. Worth a try on days when your local bakery is closed!
