While better known for writing songs of heartbreak and loss (with the occasional murder ballad thrown in for good measure!) Nashville based Erin Enderlin has chosen to release a love song as her latest single… very appropriately timed to coincide with Valentine’s Day next Monday! But “I’d Do It Different” is definitely a love song with Erin’s stamp all over it, being a reflective write which oozes melancholy throughout be it in the lyrics, vocal delivery or wonderful accompaniment including a stunner of a short instrumental break (see full track credits below) . I’m not sure if I’m the only one, but at times this beautiful slow waltz seems to nod its head sonically in places to the Kenny Roger’s classic “Lucille“.
It’s a song which has already proved very popular when showcased acoustically during her recent shows and live streams, and the announcement that a studio version was on the way was met with all round delight from her ever-expanding fanbase. Co-written with Ben Chapman over Zoom it was one of the first songs they wrote together, with Erin explaining “I had the idea – I’d been wanted to try something a little different, show a little more of my sensitive side” and this is definitely the case with this release. She continues “The last couple years have been very reflective – having so much change, and not being on the road going all the time. I’m so proud of all the dreams I’ve seen come true, and I’m really on fire to take on some new goals, but if I could go back I would do some things differently“. A very relatable notion for sure, and as the saying goes hindsight is 20/20 vision.
It sees her looking back at the highs and lows that came with chasing her dreams, and in particular realising she put her career before her marriage at times. As she puts it so beautifully during the opening verse “the wheels kept turning while my dreams were burning right through the ties that were binding“. And in the chorus she talks about how despite her husband being the one thing she did right in the past there were “the nights that I left you with no-one to hold“. The second verse sees her express her amazement that he put up with her “wandering ways” and that there was no resentment on his part, in fact he wouldn’t want her any other way.
And I guess that’s that’s part of the secret of a successful partnership of any kind, accepting and loving someone for who they are and not wanting to change anything about them.
