Introducing UK’s Maya Lane… Debut Single “Still The Same” Out Now
As always, it’s great to come across new artists from this side of the pond where we definitely have a wealth of emerging talent! The latest to be brought to my attention is London teenager Maya Lane, and one listen to her debut single “Still The Same” which was released last Friday, 18th February, left me in no doubt that she’s someone we’ll be hearing a lot more of in the future. It’s a fantastic introduction to both her storytelling lyrics and her truly beautiful voice which while being tender, nostalgic and vulnerable is also strikingly confident.
The 18-year old newcomer, who has already signed a recording deal with The Orchard and a publishing deal with Stellar Songs, is equally influenced by inspirational current artists such as Kacey Musgraves and HAIM as she is by the timeless sounds of Fleetwood Mac and Joni Mitchell.
The story goes that Maya’s father mistakenly thought that buying her a tennis racket for her 4th birthday would magically create the next Wimbledon champion, but Maya turned it upside down and started strumming it as if it was a guitar! It seems she never looked back after then, and started performing from the age of 12, both solo and as part of an all-female band. More recently, the self-confessed ’70s dream child has cultivated a first wave of followers on social media by sharing her versions of songs by the likes of Taylor Swift, Dua Lipa and Billie Eilish as well as original material.
Talking about the single Mays shares “I wrote ‘ Still The Same ‘ just after the first lockdown in 2020 with Jonathan Quarmby. I went in with a rough chorus idea based around the line ‘ dance around our kitchen’. This phrase really set it all off and led us to the song and the daily moments that remain part of us in good or bad times. I wanted to create a really vivid story line and encapsulate the feeling that sometimes the little things that are so important to you do not change even when it seems everything around you is“.
