Samantha Lloyd’s ’30 Million Pieces’ – Out Now!

Samantha Lloyd and Belles and Gals go back a long way. Samantha won the inaugural ‘Best EP’ awards at the Belles and Gals awards back in 2017 (these awards were the fore-runners to the UK Country Music Spotlight Awards) and she played at the first ever live gig hosted by us in the same year in Liverpool.

It’s great to see Samantha back with new music, with ’30 Million Pieces’ her second release, after the success of ‘Wither’ earlier this year. It’s clear that Samantha has a new found focus with her music, both releases great examples of an artist having the confidence to do things their own way. The new track is a heartbreak song in every sense of the word, the artist immediately telling the listener, ‘You had all my heart, you had all of me, now you broke off into 30 million pieces‘ as she launches into the song which questions what could have been. The production of the song gives it a fresh, current vibe, with the new direction of her sound emphasising just how much Samantha has evolved as an artist. With 2 new singles to come this year, I’m excited to see what comes next, her upcoming EP already shaping up to be one of the standout releases of 2022.

I was lucky enough to catch up with Samantha for a chat about the song!

This year has seen a new direction in your music. Is this something you’ve aimed for, or is it a natural progression in your music?
I have wanted to switch it up for such a long time, part of me was too scared about what other people would think and part of me just didn’t have the gumption! I would say it’s been a natural progression though, and I’ve been less inclined to try and write something to please people, but instead write something for me. I have to thank Rhys (Foxa Riot) who I’ve been writing and working with because he is such a great guy and he encouraged me to try new things (like the spoken sections in my new tracks).

Tell us how ’30 Million Pieces’ came about? Was it one of those instant writes, or is it a song that developed over time?
Well… BASICALLY, I had my heart broken hahaha, there’s no other way to say it. I was in pieces and I wanted to write a song that portrayed that. I felt such loss and grief, I’d never experienced a heartbreak like it, genuinely. A few weeks prior to us (Myself & Rhys) writing and recording “30 Million Pieces” I posted a YouTube cover of “Nothing Compares 2 U”. Whilst this is obviously very different to that, it’s kind of my “Nothing Compares 2 U” song. Regarding time scale this one came together fairly quickly, turns out heartbreak songs are some of the quickest to write, who knew!

What can we expect from you in the coming weeks and months?
I have another 2 singles to release this year, which will complete my EP for 2022. I want to be as consistent as possible, I’ve been writing a lot and I’m very excited to release more in 2023. I’ve got a band together, we had our first headline show in Stoke at The Underground. I’m very much looking forward to more shows. I’m sure I’ll be annoying people with my online presence but hey, I’m an independent artist so I’ve got to try and reach an audience as much as possible. I try to be as productive as I can with my time, my dreams as still big and maybe unrealistic, but if you don’t try you’ll never know.
