Jess and The Bandits Discuss New Music, Texan Country and Christmas with Jess T

Following their excellent performance at C2C in London earlier this March, Jess T caught up with Jess and The Bandits to discuss new music, Texan Country and Christmas festivities. Jess and The Bandits are a favourite for many UK Country fans with an exceptional display of energy and a genre crossing blend of Texan Country, Americana and Rock.

Jess T

How are you today, Jess? You’ve come all the way from Texas. How are you feeling?

Jess and The Bandits

I am feeling jet lagged, but great. Yeah, really good.

Jess T

You’ve just played, and you had a great crowd, they were absolutely roaring. Did that feel good?

Jess and the Bandits

Oh, yeah, it felt so good. You know, I said this a few times this weekend, I can say that I am feeling like myself again, since becoming a wife and a mother. You give yourself to everyone else but you and so now, it’s feels like, oh, there’s Jess! There she is. That’s me again. So, it’s great.

Jess T

Absolutely, I get that. I get that completely. You have been busy; you’ve been really busy. So, you have had two boys, during lockdown, but you’ve also still been making music and new music is on its way. So, tell us all about that!

Jess and The Bandits

Yeah, I’ve been writing like everyone else has! What else you’re going to do when you’re locked down other than have babies apparently? New music is coming! We just released our latest single called, hey, girl. Just separate single releases but now we are working on a collection of work which is hopefully going to be a new album by the end of the year. I have a lot to talk about. A lot of life experience and all these things. So, I’m excited to put that into a new Body of work.

Jess T

Absolutely. I think that’s what it’s all about. You have to go under the new experiences and look at old experiences and put them together into, you know, your creativity. You do talk a lot about your life and experiences that you have. What is in the new music? So do we have Ballads. Do we have some upbeat music because you’re really, you know, you do rock a crowd?

Jess and The Bandits

Yeah. As Jess and the Bandits, we are known for like bringing the party and putting on a show. So that is something that’s a part of our DNA as a band so that will always be there; but I think we are going to bring in just some more depth into things. We’ll have our fun drinking songs, but I think a bit more depth into some of the songs and ballads because I love a good ballad. I’m really fortunate to have some incredible writers actually submitting some songs to me. I’ve got to do one of them today called “god did good” and that’s by a writer named Jeff Cohen and Christian Bush of Sugarland. So that’s super exciting to actually have people letting me sing their songs, so it’s great.

Jess T

How do you find the Texas Country scene? You’ve lived over in the UK and you’re back here playing for us. But how do you find Texas? How do you find the music scene in Texas when you’re out there.

Jess and The Bandits

Texas Country is a genre all in itself which is incredible. It is I think one of the fastest growing markets, where an artist can never leave the state of Texas and make it massive. I mean, Aaron Watson is a perfect example of that. He’s like one of the biggest Texas country artists and he hasn’t necessarily gone mainstream and so Texas country is incredible and it’s great to see it grow. It’s really cool to see it starting to make its way over to the UK. It’s so fun and I always try to throw in some Texas Country into my songs like ‘single tonight’. I call that my Texas Country song because it’s just it’s just proper Texas Country.

Jess T

Not everybody brings the flavour of the state that they live in because it’s whatever appeals to you and, and as we said, Country is a massively broad genre as long as well as Americana. So, with that, you know, comes all different flavours that you adopt. So, you do bring some Texan, you know, style into your music. I think you certainly have a vibe of your own.

You love your Christmas music and that’s something I found really, really fun as well. Will there be something coming up in winter for us?

Jess and the Bandits

I think so. We enjoyed that so much, because it was nice to, of course, do my songs from the country albums, but also, it’s just a great time to be festive. What I thought was incredible is that there were so many people that came to see us that have never seen us before because they just wanted to go to something, festive and Christmassy. So, it’s such a really special way of introducing myself to a whole new audience and gaining new fans in a way I didn’t expect to so, who knows? We may have to. We’re thinking big for this Christmas thing, we we’re thinking growing it bringing on more artists and turning this into a really exciting yearly thing potentially.

Jess T

That’s exactly why I brought it up because I know you Jess as ‘Jess Christmas’ because I know you’re always going to deliver around Christmas time. There’s going to be something festive from you. So, I think if that’s a little niche, you’ve got there to bring other artists into that it is a fantastic idea. Well, thank you so much for spending some time with me today. We just enjoyed seeing you on stage, I wish you the best and I can’t wait to see some new music.
