Whether you’re using wax or an electric epilator, hair removal is seldom a fun experience. However, by adopting the right techniques, you can lessen the pain. Here’s your guide!
As summer approaches—or indeed any time of year you choose—it’s time to tackle unwanted hair. Sadly, the perfect hair removal method hasn’t been invented yet. So, once again, we rely on familiar solutions like razors and electric epilators. Despite the minor hassles, waxing or using an electric epilator offers longer-lasting smoothness, giving you clear, soft legs for several weeks. However, these techniques can be painful and may even feel torturous depending on individual pain thresholds. While it’s impossible to eliminate discomfort entirely, don’t hesitate to follow these tips to reduce pain during hair removal.
1. Prepare Your Skin
It’s essential to prepare your skin before a hair removal session to ensure that hairs come out easily so you won’t have to go over the same area multiple times. Consider taking a hot shower beforehand to open up your skin’s pores. The day before, perform an exfoliation with a suitable product and a loofah if necessary to bring out any potential ingrown hairs.
2. Wax Regularly
Easier said than done, right? But it’s true! The more frequently you wax, the less pain you will feel. The ordeal will become increasingly tolerable with each session. Furthermore, hairs will grow back slower and sparser. Over a few years, you might even find that hair disappears completely from some areas.
3. Wax in the Shower
Today, there are electric epilators available that can be used in the shower thanks to wet & dry technology. So, try waxing in your bath or under warm water. This method releases endorphins, reducing skin discomfort and irritation. With practice, waxing can become almost painless.
4. Use the Right Techniques
To avoid pain, you need to know how to wax properly. If you pull in the wrong direction or don’t pull off the wax strip correctly, it can be painful. Thus, it’s important to master professional techniques. When removing hair, you can stretch the skin in the opposite direction of the epilator’s movement. Similarly, if you’re using wax, pull the skin down if you’re pulling the strip up. Don’t forget to use talc to make the wax adhere better and facilitate hair removal.
5. Cool the Waxed Area
After pulling off the wax strip or using the epilator, press your hand against the treated area. This will limit blood flow and soothe the stressed skin. While hot water can be effective in reducing pain, cold water is also beneficial. You can place a cotton pad soaked in cold water on your irritated skin or numb the area just before waxing with a glove filled with ice cubes.
