Tired of dealing with damaged hair after summer? Find out what hairstylists do to keep their locks pristine.

Let’s debunk this myth: mermaids with flawless hair don’t exist. In reality, their hair suffers from the effects of sea salt or pool chlorine. Why? The reason is quite straightforward.

Sea salt dehydrates hair fibers, making them dry, coarse, and dull. This also leaves them more susceptible to external damage like sunlight, wind, or friction. Chlorine, on the other hand, is a harsh chemical designed to eliminate bacteria that might be tempted to take a dip. The issue? It doesn’t distinguish between microbes and your hair. That’s why it’s common to see hair fibers deteriorate after swimming. Fortunately, there’s a super simple and free trick to protect them, shared by hairstylist Océane Vakian on Instagram. “Before you dive in headfirst, wet your hair with clean water so it’s saturated and won’t absorb the chlorinated water,” she advises. This method is equally effective against sea salt.

Imagine this: the hairstylist holds a sponge in each hand, representing your hair. The first sponge is dry and immediately soaks up the salty or chlorinated water when dipped. The second sponge, however, has been pre-wet under a shower. The result? It doesn’t absorb anything more because it’s already saturated with water! This way, your hair remains in good condition.

However, be warned: this practice doesn’t protect against the sun. UV rays degrade hair fibers just as they do skin. Thus, you must shield your hair with a special hair mist. Océane Vakian even suggests a selection of these products at the end of her video.

Lastly, here’s another valuable tip: wear a hat or cap. Not only does this help prevent heatstroke, but it also minimizes damage to your hair. Now, all the local mermaids can swim peacefully.
