Before you dive into the ocean or pool, there’s a simple trick that can make a big difference in keeping your hair beautiful during the summer.
Summer means long beach days, spontaneous dips in the pool, and sun-soaked vacations. While these activities boost our spirits, they can be harsh on our hair. UV rays, wind, sea salt, and chlorine can take a toll on our tresses, leaving them dry, brittle, and dull.

Over the weeks, hair loses its luster, ends become fragile, and colored hair might even fade faster than expected. Many people turn to nourishing masks or restorative oils to mitigate the damage. However, an important part of prevention actually occurs before you even shampoo. In fact, there’s a simple, yet often overlooked habit that hair care experts swear by that can make a significant difference in the health of your hair post-vacation.
This useful tip is shared on TikTok by the popular beauty and hair care influencer, amoudaxtiktok. According to him, this practice can better protect the hair shaft against summer elements. His advice is straightforward: simply rinse your hair with fresh water before going swimming, whether in the sea or a pool. He explains, “This trick reduces the damage from salt water and chlorine. If you dive in with dry hair, your hair will absorb a lot of salt water. But if you saturate it with fresh water first, you’ll limit how much salt water it can absorb.” The logic is sound. Hair that’s already soaked with fresh water will absorb less saltwater or chlorinated water. Consequently, the hair is better shielded from the drying effects of salt and chlorine, which are responsible for making the hair feel rough and tangled after swimming.
To further enhance hair protection, it’s also recommended to rinse your hair with clean water immediately after coming out of the sea or pool to quickly remove any residues of salt or chlorine. Adding a protective spray to your routine can help maintain your hair’s softness, flexibility, and shine throughout the summer.

Before your next swim, remember this quick tip that only takes a few seconds but can help your hair stay healthier throughout the entire summer season.
