When applying sunscreen, there’s one area of your face you likely forget. This particularly delicate spot is one of the most vulnerable to UV damage.
It’s an automatic response as soon as the sunny days roll in. Before stepping out, we meticulously apply our sunscreen: the nose, cheeks, forehead, and not forgetting the neck. We think we’ve fully shielded our face from UV rays. However, dermatologists warn there’s a facial area we consistently miss.
Indeed, according to a clinical study by the University of Liverpool, nearly 80% of people skip this area when applying sunscreen. The issue? Ultraviolet rays do not skip it. They penetrate deeply, speeding up premature aging and significantly increasing the risk of skin cancer.
The skin in this specific area is up to five times thinner than the rest of the face. Lacking in sebaceous glands, it hardly has any natural hydrolipidic film to protect against external aggressions. This often-neglected area is around the eyes, including the eyelids and the hollows of the under-eye. The skin here is extremely thin and constantly subjected to our expressions and eye blinks (around 10,000 per day!), making the effects of the sun both devastating and immediate: early appearance of fine lines (or crow’s feet), increased hyperpigmentation that deepens the look of dark circles, and premature sagging of the eyelids. So, how can we address this oversight? To effectively include this area in your routine without discomfort, steer clear of regular body sunscreen, which is often too heavy and fragrant. Instead, choose eye-specific sun care products. Formulated under ophthalmological control, they don’t migrate into the eyes. You might consider sunscreen sticks for sensitive areas, which provide a solid, precise texture that allows for targeted application without smudging. Additionally, there are also tinted eye contours with SPF available. In any case, don’t just smear the product on. Instead, apply a small dab of cream on the orbital bone (the bone structure around the eye) and gently tap it in with your ring finger, moving from the nose outward.
For optimal protection, invest in a good pair of sunglasses certified CE (category 3 or 4) with wide or wraparound lenses. They serve as a physical barrier against direct UV rays and reflections.
Now, you have no excuse: this summer, keep your eyes wide open to sun protection!
