Do you find yourself flipping, lifting, and tapping all the watermelons at the grocery store in search of the ripest one? Yet, there’s really just one detail that truly deserves your attention.

As the temperature rises, watermelon becomes the ultimate summer staple. There’s hardly anything more refreshing than this giant cucurbit with its red flesh, which is over 90% water. Whether sliced for dessert, cubed in a salad with feta and mint, blended into a slushy or smoothie, or served as a carpaccio, it enhances outdoor meals and picnics with its crunchy texture, refreshing taste, and mild sweetness, making it one of the most anticipated fruits of the season… provided you pick a well-ripened one.

However, that’s where it gets tricky. Feeling a watermelon as you might a kiwi or an avocado doesn’t suffice to determine its ripeness. Beneath its thick, tough skin, it zealously guards its secrets until it’s cut open. Sometimes, this leads to the bitter disappointment of biting into a bland or mealy piece.

Everyone has their own little strategy for finding the tastiest melon at the stand. Some weigh them, convinced that a heavier watermelon for its size will be juicier. Others tap them with the palm of their hand, listening for a hollow sound. Many also look for the famous yellow spot, left by contact with the ground, hoping it indicates full maturation. These are popular tricks, though their interpretation can sometimes be tricky.

According to the American media outlet Real Simple, there is a much more reliable and simpler indicator to observe: the color of the rind. A ripe watermelon will have distinctly marked, regular stripes. The green bands should display a deep, intense green, while the lighter bands should be a cream-yellow. This contrast suggests a fruit picked at the right time. Conversely, faded stripes, poorly defined or too pale, often reveal a watermelon harvested too early.

This visual method is quick and easy to apply and, while not foolproof (as variety and growing conditions also play a role), it at least spares you from playing percussionist in the fruit and vegetable aisle!
