Struggling with oily hair and unsure why? A hairstylist sheds light on the cause!

Your hair can have bad days too, often due to excessive sebum. While sebum plays a crucial protective role for your scalp, too much of it can leave your hair feeling greasy.

There are numerous factors that contribute to excessive sebum: pollution, hormonal imbalances, stress, and even overwashing your hair. However, there’s one product that’s often overlooked—the dry shampoo. “The issue with using it is that it absorbs surface sebum but doesn’t regulate its production. Worse, using it too frequently can suffocate the scalp, causing it to produce even more sebum,” explains Nathalie Dessert, a stylist at Blissim salon. If you’re using dry shampoo excessively, it might be wise to cut back. The more you use it, the quicker your hair gets oily again.

Nathalie also pointed out ingredients that can increase sebum production: denatured alcohol (which dries out and irritates the scalp), silicones (which coat the hair shaft but prevent it from breathing), and synthetic fragrances (which can cause irritation and itching).

To avoid making your hair oilier, limit the use of dry shampoo to once or twice a week. Opt for gentle, natural shampoos instead. Nathalie Dessert recommends products like Cut By Fred – Vegan Dry Shampoo (alcohol-free, silicone-free), or Rahua Voluminous Dry Shampoo (100% natural, residue-free).

Additional tips include using natural powders like cornstarch or white clay (apply lightly to the roots and brush out thoroughly). Try to gradually extend the time between washes: the more frequently you wash your hair, the more sebum your scalp produces to compensate. Finally, consider scalp massages to boost blood circulation and help distribute sebum evenly.

In conclusion, with the right routine and gentle products, you can manage sebum production effectively without the burden of constantly oily hair!
