After 50, losing weight can become a tougher challenge. However, there’s one drink that might just make the process easier, attracting the attention of nutritionists everywhere.
Shedding pounds after the age of 50 can be somewhat frustrating. It feels like you’re putting in the same effort as before, not overeating, yet the weight clings on as if it has a permanent lease. As we age, our bodies burn slightly less energy and our muscle mass gradually decreases. This means that the habits that worked a decade or two ago don’t necessarily yield the same results now.
This is one reason why more and more people are paying close attention to what they put in their morning cup. Indeed, certain drinks are selected for their nutritional profile, aimed at making dietary rebalancing more effective. Among these, one in particular is starting to stand out. Why? Because it naturally contains fibers and proteins, two crucial nutrients when trying to lose weight. Fibers slow down digestion, while proteins extend the feeling of fullness. This makes it easier to eat enough without increasing portion sizes.
As reported by Woman’s World magazine, Dr. Will Haas, founder of VYVE Wellness, also points out that the main ingredient of this drink has a rather unique feature: when mixed with water, it swells and creates a naturally thick texture. This characteristic further slows down digestion and helps extend satiety. Of course, the idea isn’t to drink a glass in the morning and expect to lose a pound by the next day – if only it were that simple. However, incorporating this drink into a balanced diet can help more easily achieve a caloric deficit, which is essential for weight loss.
The drink in question is chia seed milk. It’s made by soaking chia seeds in water for eight to twelve hours before blending them into a smooth texture. You can add a bit of vanilla, cinnamon, or a touch of honey to taste, and it can be stored for up to five days in the refrigerator. It’s also available pre-made in some specialty stores or online.
Dr. Maria Knöbel, a lifestyle medicine specialist, also featured in Woman’s World, followed a 52-year-old woman who lost 18 pounds in four months after replacing her morning latte with this drink. Experts believe that this liquid form has advantages over consuming the seeds directly.
After several hours of soaking, the seeds are already well hydrated, which might facilitate the assimilation of certain nutrients. It’s also much more convenient on a daily basis. A glass at breakfast, a bit in a smoothie, porridge, or even in coffee, and you’re all set.
