During her Coachella 2025 performance on Friday, Tyla appeared in an outfit that many believed paid homage to Britney Spears’ iconic 2001 MTV VMAs ensemble. This assumption was largely due to the striking resemblance between their outfits.
At 23 years old, Tyla chose to wear a green vintage balconette bra from Dolce & Gabbana’s Spring 2001 line, paired with denim shorts adorned with beaded fringe and silver safety pins. The overall look bore a remarkable similarity to Spears’ attire during her memorable “I’m a Slave 4 U” performance, which occurred 24 years earlier.
Britney Spears’ outfit for that performance included a green bra with pink jewel accents and cutouts, complemented by low-rise denim shorts featuring a butterfly design and numerous scarves around the waist. This ensemble was the creation of costume designers Kurt and Bart, and Spears famously accessorized with a yellow Burmese python.
Tyla Clears the Air on Social Media
By Sunday, Tyla took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to clarify that her outfit choice was not inspired by Spears, despite what fans speculated. “Love her but I just thought the outfit was fly…no inspo,” she stated.
However, her comment section quickly filled with skepticism, with many fans challenging her statement. Some followers explicitly doubted the coincidence, with one asking, “Do you not know what inspo means?” while another bluntly labeled her a “fraud.” Others suggested that maybe not Tyla herself, but someone in her styling team must have been inspired by Spears.

This is not the first instance of Tyla channeling legendary pop figures through her fashion choices. In a previous appearance at the MTV EMAs in November 2024 held in Manchester, London, Tyla was seen in a blue Roberto Cavalli gown from 2000 that strongly resembled the one Aaliyah wore at that year’s MTV VMAs.
Whether these style choices are intentional or not, Tyla’s knack for referencing major pop culture moments through her wardrobe continues to spark conversation and admiration among fashion watchers and fans alike.
