An Often Overlooked Tax Deduction with Significant Benefits

When it comes to paying taxes, many taxpayers are on the lookout for ways to lower their bills. While most are familiar with the benefits of claiming child care expenses, certain home improvements, home employment costs, or charitable donations, there is another effective, yet frequently overlooked method that can also lead to a substantial tax credit—even for those who do not owe taxes. This opportunity is available to a wide range of individuals including employees, government workers, retirees, the unemployed, and military personnel.

The expenditure in question involves union dues, which are voluntary payments made by an employee or member to a labor union to support its activities (such as defending worker rights and negotiating collective agreements). According to the public service website, these contributions qualify for a tax credit equal to 66% of the amount paid, up to a maximum of 1% of your taxable gross income.

For instance, if your taxable gross income is €30,000, your union dues are capped at €300 (1% of €30,000). This can result in a tax credit of €198 (66% of €300). Importantly, this tax credit is refundable, meaning that you can benefit from it even if you do not owe any taxes. Military personnel who contribute to “representative national professional military associations” are also eligible, as specified by the authorities. However, to take advantage of this, you must correctly report this expense on your tax return.

Union dues should be reported in boxes 7AC, 7AE, or 7AG under the “Reductions and tax credits” section of form number 2042 RICI. Be sure to keep any payment receipts provided by your union. It is not necessary to attach these receipts to your tax return, but they should be retained for your records.
