A seasonal vegetable is perfect as it contains 6 g of carbohydrates per 100 g, and about 2 g of fiber. Additionally, it’s non-starchy, so it can easily fill half your plate.

What sets this vegetable apart is that it contains a unique sulfur compound called sulforaphane. Despite the complex name, its effect is well researched: this compound plays a role in reducing blood sugar levels by improving insulin sensitivity and reducing oxidative stress. These are crucial factors for losing weight without feeling deprived. Indeed, less insulin means less fat storage, and less inflammation leads to a more efficient metabolism.

Another weight loss benefit is its high water content. At over 90%, this vegetable hydrates while nourishing. “When your blood sugar levels rise, you’re at a higher risk of dehydration because high blood sugar increases the frequency of urination,” the dietitian explains. A dehydrated body tends to concentrate sugar in the bloodstream… and sends out hunger signals, often mistaken for the desire to eat. As a result, you might snack, store more fat, and continue the cycle. However, this vegetable helps break that cycle. Its name? Broccoli.

Available almost all year, especially from May through July, broccoli remains affordable, cooks quickly, and retains its nutrients even when frozen. It doesn’t require complicated recipes or strict diets. You can shred it raw, stir-fry it in a wok, blend it into a soup, or include it in an omelet. It fills you up without frustration.
