As soon as hair is bleached, it immediately becomes more fragile. But how can you achieve the hair color of your dreams while keeping your hair healthy? Olivier Lebrun, founder of Olab Paris salon, shares his expert advice on how to successfully meet this challenge.

Bleaching is a crucial process for those wanting to lighten their hair and achieve a bright, glamorous blonde. However, this method can weaken the hair fibers.

What is Hair Bleaching?

Bleaching is a technique used to remove pigment from hair. When performed on virgin hair, it is referred to as “bleaching,” whereas on previously dyed hair, it is known as “stripping.” Bleaching is intended to lighten hair up to five shades from its original color. Once the hair is bleached, it permanently loses its natural pigments. Therefore, it is important to think carefully before proceeding because if you change your mind, the only way to revert to your original hair color would be to apply a new color over the bleached hair.

How Does Bleaching Work?

Bleaching involves using hydrogen peroxide (in varying concentrations). The process works by lifting the cuticles to oxidize the hair and strip away the pigments. This gradual process requires a precise timing of application. It’s generally better to bleach your hair at a professional salon, although home bleaching kits are readily available at retail stores and wholesalers. As for ammonia-free bleaching products, caution is advised regarding their use and ingredients. “Regardless of the product, oxidation of the hair is necessary. If a product claims to be ammonia-free, it will undoubtedly contain another ingredient, sometimes even more harmful than ammonia,” explains Olivier Lebrun.

How to Repair Hair Weakened by Bleaching?

Bleaching can make the hair porous and dry. Naturally, hair that was already damaged before bleaching will have a harder time recovering. To restore softness and flexibility to your hair after bleaching, applying a nourishing mask is essential. “Start by carefully brushing your hair from the tips to the roots without pulling, section by section, using a natural bristle brush,” our expert advises. Then, dampen your hair with clean water before applying the mask. Choose a product free from silicones and parabens. If you prefer homemade products, opt for a mask made of avocado or argan oil, both known for their nourishing properties. Apply your mask meticulously, using a brush or your hands, focusing on the lengths while avoiding the roots. “Ensure the product is fully absorbed by massaging it into the hair, not just laying it on top,” insists Olivier Lebrun. Allow the mask to sit for the recommended time, then rinse with a mixture of coconut water and lemon juice for added shine.

How to Maintain Bleached Hair?

For flawless results, if you have dark roots, make sure to bleach them regularly. Use purple toning treatments daily to maintain the brightness of your blonde and prevent brassiness. Indulge in nourishing treatments and apply a mask after each shampoo to avoid a straw-like effect. Also, limit the use of heat styling tools. “Find the right temperature for your hair. Start at the lowest setting and gradually increase until you find the ideal heat. You need to adjust according to your hair type,” he concludes.
