The color of a dog’s toys plays a crucial role in its happiness. An animal behavior specialist insists that a specific hue can significantly influence a dog’s engagement with its playthings.
When a dog seemingly ignores the brand-new ball you’ve just given it, it might not be out of disinterest. It could very well be that the dog is simply unable to see it properly due to its visual system. Unlike humans, who have three types of photoreceptors in their retinas, dogs only have two. This means they can’t perceive the full spectrum of light. Their visual world is limited to a much narrower range of shades, where certain colors blend together. For instance, red appears to them as brown or gray, and green doesn’t stand out much either. Therefore, a red toy thrown on the grass, even on a sunny day, might be completely invisible to a dog.
Quoted by our colleagues at Express.co, British veterinarian Brian Faulkner explains, “Understanding how our pets see the world allows us to tailor our interactions with them, whether it’s selecting toys in the right color, designing play spaces that stimulate their senses, or understanding why they might not always notice a treat right in front of them.” Pet insurance company Petplan has conducted a study on the sensory needs of pets. It reveals that while dogs’ vision is less blurry than previously thought, it is still very different from ours. Their color perception is not absent but selective. Certain hues catch their attention while others go unnoticed. Dr. Brian Faulkner emphasizes, “Knowing this can really help owners make smarter choices.” Therefore, choosing accessories based on our preferences makes little sense. It’s better to focus on what the dog can easily identify, whether for entertainment, training, reassurance, or stimulation.
In this regard, any toys that blend in with the floor, lawn, or furniture are likely to be overlooked. Contrast is more crucial than shape or texture. This is where color comes into play. In this area, the colors that make a difference are blue and yellow. Bright blue and yellow remain perfectly visible to dogs, regardless of the setting, be it an indoor carpet or an outdoor field. Unlike red or green, blue and yellow clearly stand out in their field of vision.
These are also the colors to favor for educational toys, frisbees, plush toys, or balls. As you can see, there’s no need to invest in a complete range of sophisticated items. What matters is their visibility to the animal. A toy that catches a dog’s eye isn’t necessarily the one that shines or flashes, but the one that stands out from the rest!
