At her Tour Ma Vie show in Melbourne, Australia, on Tuesday, Doja Cat revived the flamboyant 1980s vibe by emulating pop legend Cyndi Lauper. She sported a spiky fuchsia wig and vivid neon makeup.
The 30-year-old rapper dazzled the audience at Rod Laver Arena dressed in a leopard print lamé bodysuit with bright yellow puffy sleeves designed by Louis Verdad. Her look was completed with bold jewelry from House of Emmanuele and fingerless lace gloves.
Styled by hairstylist Jared Henderson, also known as JStay Ready, her flamboyant feathered pink wig paid homage to Lauper’s renowned jagged hairstyles and bright color choices. Makeup artist Ivan Núñez complemented the wig with bold strokes of dark blue and electric yellow eyeshadow.
The outfit was put together by Brett Alan Nelson, Doja’s creative director, who played a key role in shaping her decidedly ’80s-themed “Vie” era.
This aesthetic has been heavily influenced by icons such as Lauper, Madonna, Prince, and Janet Jackson, all of whom Doja has acknowledged as inspirations for her fifth studio album.
Cyndi Lauper herself would likely commend Doja’s theatrical style. Known for her hit “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” Lauper has expressed admiration for modern pop stars who emphasize visual performance art. Recently, she praised Chappell Roan following Roan’s performance at the VMAs in September.
“The hair alone, come on!” Lauper exclaimed during an appearance on “Watch What Happens Live” with Andy Cohen. “And it’s performance art. It’s so visual. You know I love those visual things, obviously.”
At the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in November, Roan honored Lauper by wearing a custom newspaper skirt reminiscent of Lauper’s “True Colors” music video. Doja Cat also performed at this event, covering OutKast’s “Ms. Jackson.”
Doja has embraced the ’80s theme throughout her Tour Ma Vie, which began on Nov. 18 in Auckland, New Zealand, and will conclude in December 2026 in New York City.
Her commitment to emulating musical legends isn’t limited to Lauper. Last month, Doja wore a chainmail dress inspired by Tina Turner’s look in “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome” during her performance for Vogue World: Hollywood.
She launched her “Vie” era in September at the VMAs, wearing a pastel Balmain mini dress paired with butter yellow platform heels and a lipstick-shaped Judith Leiber clutch.
Her album was released on Sept. 26 and debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 in its first week.
