Over the weekend in Portofino, Italy, Christina Aguilera brought back her iconic Y2K fashion, sporting a striking bandanna during a boat outing, as captured in photos by Page Six.

Dressed entirely in white, from her outfit to her flip-flops, the 45-year-old singer accessorized with a sparkling blue-and-white headscarf while enjoying the day on the water with her fiancé, Matthew Rutler.
The award-winning artist completed her ensemble with a chic pair of sunglasses.
Known for her frequent use of headscarves in the early 2000s, Aguilera was often seen in this style while promoting her 2002 album “Stripped,” a time when she also sported black extensions in her otherwise platinum blonde hair.

In a recent conversation with Harper’s Bazaar, Aguilera reflected on this phase of her career, sharing that she sought to avoid feeling “too boxed in or to play it safe.” She expressed her determination to fully and authentically express herself once she gained creative control over her music, emphasizing her desire to have fun with her artistic expression.
The pop sensation, known for her hit “Genie in the Bottle,” discussed how experimenting with her hair color represented a new phase, moving from lifelong blonde to adding black, preluding her full shift to black hair in 2003.
Aguilera enthusiastically recalled the dual nature of her “Stripped” album’s content and material, which she felt naturally extended to her hairstyle, blending both light and dark elements in alignment with the music’s themes.
Discussing the technical challenges of her hairstyle, one of her hairstylists, Priscilla Valles, revealed to Refinery29 in 2019 that Peter Savic was the creative genius behind Aguilera’s black extensions. Savic recounted a memorable incident when the dye from the extensions bled into the blonde, turning it gray right before a performance, which he described as a “bit of a panic moment.” However, he noted that Aguilera prefers styles that are a bit unconventional or messy.
In a 2018 interview with Cosmopolitan, Aguilera looked back at her bold style choices during the “Stripped” era, particularly her “Dirrty” music video look, which was deemed “extremely controversial” at the time. The “Burlesque” star, who famously repurposed a headscarf as a top for the 2002 MTV VMAs, mused that such daring looks would be considered tame by today’s standards.
She concluded by expressing her hope that her fearless fashion choices had helped establish a more open environment where women feel empowered to embrace and proudly display whichever version of themselves they choose.
