Turning Back Time

This past Saturday night, Cher dazzled audiences at the start of Dolce & Gabbana’s several-day Alta Moda event in Rome, where she revived one of her most legendary—and debated—music video looks.

The legendary singer paid tribute to the infamous Bob Mackie-designed catsuit from her 1989 “If I Could Turn Back Time” music video. The outfit was a sheer bodysuit adorned with a narrow strip of black fabric strategically placed, which notably showcased her tattooed backside.

Cher paired this daring ensemble with a large black leather jacket and an eye-catching belt, complemented by her curly, full-bodied hair.

Over the course of the weekend, she revisited the look with a modern twist, wearing a crystal-encrusted catsuit that featured mesh cutouts and thigh-high boots.

While the original outfit remains a hallmark of iconic fashion moments, it certainly stirred controversy when it first appeared.

Bob Mackie, who has dressed Cher in many audacious outfits over the years, including the original “seat belt” ensemble, once admitted to feeling ashamed of the provocative design. He shared with Yahoo Entertainment last December that he often advised Cher against certain outfits for specific events, though she was keen on pushing fashion boundaries. He recalled telling her, “Well, you can’t wear that for this—an award show or whatever,” and she would reluctantly agree.

Mackie even asked Cher not to reveal that he was the designer of the notorious outfit, saying, “Please don’t tell anyone that I designed this. Don’t let anyone know this. I’m embarrassed,” but now he acknowledges the outfit’s controversial impact.

Nods to Past and Present Styles

During her performance, Cher might have also referenced another memorable look—the blonde hair from her 2001 “Song for the Lonely” music video—by stepping onto stage in a striking platinum wig.

She complemented the wig with a dark green jumpsuit and a glittering corset, all designed by Dolce & Gabbana.

With both an outfit change and a wig switch during a single performance, Cher proved once again that she’s a master of dramatic flair and transformation, uniquely blending past and present styles with impeccable ease.
