Ariana Grande Channels ‘70s Glam on SNL in Iconic Carol Burnett Dress!

Ariana Grande took a nostalgic fashion route to promote her next appearance on “Saturday Night Live.”

The 32-year-old “Wicked” actress chose a classic ensemble, a vintage Bob Mackie gown, famously worn by comedy icon Carol Burnett during an opening monologue on “The Carol Burnett Show” in 1973.

The gown’s stylist, Law Roach, discovered the yellow, brown, and saffron chevron-striped halter-neck gown, which comes with a matching shawl, at Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills.

This particular outfit was purchased for $3,840 at the earlier “Bold Luxury: Bob Mackie, Stage Glamour & The Couture Edit” auction this month.

At that same auction, the item fetching the highest bid — $57,600 — was a 1978 sequined outfit worn by Cher, a frequent collaborator of Mackie and coincidentally, the musical guest for this week’s “SNL.”

Choosing this gown links Grande to Mackie’s impressive history of outfitting showbiz elites. Mackie is credited with designing roughly 17,000 costumes for “The Carol Burnett Show” during its 11-year tenure.

Mackie’s earlier work includes assisting Jean Louis on Marilyn Monroe’s renowned 1962 “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” dress, which Kim Kardashian wore to the 2022 Met Gala.

Today, Mackie’s designs are still a popular choice among modern celebrities for red carpet events. Stars like Miley Cyrus, Zendaya, and Sabrina Carpenter have all worn his creations, and Taylor Swift showcased several of his lavish outfits during her “Life of a Showgirl” album release.

Grande is currently busy promoting her latest movie, “Wicked: For Good,” which premiered last month. She stars as Glinda, alongside Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba, in the two-part film directed by Jon M. Chu.

This marks Grande’s fifth appearance on “SNL.”

Previously, she has appeared as a musical guest in 2014 and March 2024, hosted and performed in 2016, and most recently took on hosting duties in October 2024.
