In 2025, the December holiday break will begin just before Christmas. To ensure everyone can celebrate the end-of-year festivities together, all three academic zones will share the same holiday dates.
Each year, the Christmas vacation is eagerly anticipated by all students (and their teachers!). This break traditionally marks the end of the most challenging period of the academic year. As weeks pass by, exhaustion builds up, temperatures drop, and naturally, children yearn for nothing more than to rest at home and enjoy the holiday season—a festive and joyful break for both kids and parents.
What are the Dates for the 2025 Christmas Vacation?
This year-end, students can look forward to unwinding starting Saturday, December 20, 2025, which signals the official start of the Christmas break. They will return to school on Monday, January 5, 2026, when classes resume for all grades.
Christmas Vacation Dates According to Zones
Unlike other breaks during the school year—such as the winter and spring breaks—the Christmas vacation always occurs on the same dates for all zones A, B, and C, from December 20, 2025, to January 5, 2026. Just like during the All Saints’ Day break or the long summer holidays, students in zone A (Besançon, Bordeaux, Clermont-Ferrand, Dijon, Grenoble, Limoges, Lyon, and Poitiers) will take their break simultaneously with those in zone B (Aix, Marseille, Amiens, Caen, Lille, Nancy, Metz, Nantes, Nice, Orléans, Tours, Reims, Rennes, Rouen, and Strasbourg) as well as those in zone C (Créteil, Montpellier, Paris, Toulouse, and Versailles) and Corsica. Indeed, it’s impossible to stagger the vacation by zones when Christmas and New Year’s Day fall on the same dates for everyone!
Which Days to Take Off for the Longest Christmas Break?
For adults, certain strategies can be employed to maximize vacation time while minimizing the number of days off needed. This year, both December 25th and January 1st fall on a Thursday, and are, of course, public holidays. This means that by taking off Friday, December 26, and January 2, you can enjoy two consecutive long weekends of four days each. However, to match the vacation period of your kids, you would still need to take off eight days.
