Delivering a powerful rendition of the black national anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” before the game started, Jones appeared in a sporty yet elegant white nylon jacket and skirt designed by Karl Kani.
This attire was a tribute to Whitney Houston’s famous performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the Super Bowl in 1991.
Details of the Outfit
The skirt Jones wore featured a high waist with a drawstring and elastic waistband reminiscent of vintage track pants, which cleverly cinched the voluminous bubble-hem mini skirt.
Adding to the spectacle, a flowing white train surrounded her legs, gracefully falling and pooling on the stage below her.
The cropped bomber jacket she sported was adorned with a corseted detail around the bodice and sparkled with crystal-covered stripes in red, black, and green across the arms and chest, colors that symbolize the Pan African flag. These elements, along with the anthem she performed, were significant during Black History Month, echoing themes of the Civil Rights Movement.
Homage to Whitney Houston
In contrast, Whitney Houston had opted for a Le Coq Sportif tracksuit and Nike sneakers back in 1991. Jones also wore a wide white headband, mirroring Houston’s style.
The violinists supporting her performance also matched Jones’ theme, wearing coordinated pants and zip-up jackets, which visually transported the audience back in time.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight before the event, the 28-year-old singer expressed her excitement about her outfit and the tribute to Whitney Houston.
