Are all supermarket pizzas subpar? According to this renowned nutritionist, there’s a budget-friendly standout.

With nearly 22 pounds consumed per person each year, the French rank as the second-highest pizza eaters globally, just behind Americans. This booming market for the trattoria favorite saw a 14.7% increase in sales volume from 2021 to 2023. What drives this pizza passion? According to a survey conducted by Enov for Pizza Cosy and reported by France Pizza, 83% of respondents view it as a symbol of togetherness. Interestingly, it’s not in Italian restaurants where most people prefer to enjoy their slices; 80% admit they’d rather indulge at home. Settled comfortably on the couch with a slice in hand, one is all set for an enjoyable TV evening (even when there’s nothing compelling on).

Comforting and unifying, yes. But what about the nutritional value of our pizza? It largely depends on the thickness of the crust and, more importantly, the toppings. A simple margherita with just tomato sauce, mozzarella, and basil won’t tally up the same calorie count as a loaded four-cheese pizza. You don’t have to be a nutrition expert to figure that out. However, comparing different commercial brands (and untangling their often lengthy ingredient lists) is something even seasoned shoppers appreciate expert help with.

On his YouTube channel, Dr. Jean-Michel Cohen reviewed several supermarket pizzas. Expecting the worst, the famous nutritionist was pleasantly surprised to find that some were quite decent, like the Carrefour Classic ham and cheese pizza. Made with 22% tomato puree, 17% ham, 13% emmental, 3.1% mozzarella, and 2% olives, it boasts “a rather good composition” and contains more proteins than fats—a key factor to check when choosing a processed meal. Still, he warns not to eat it all alone as it remains quite rich; half a pizza is more than enough.

While some products slightly outperform others nutritionally (like the Sodebo four-cheese pizza, surprisingly), the Carrefour pizza stands out for its excellent value for money. At less than 3 euros for a 450g pizza, even your wallet will be happy!
