What’s your go-to sleeping position at night: on your back, stomach, or perhaps the right or left side? Dr. Jimmy Mohamed highlights that one of these poses might be contributing to the development of wrinkles. Here’s his explanation.
On Monday, February 3, during his segment Health Tips with Dr. Jimmy Mohamed on RTL, the health expert addressed the following question: What’s the best position to sleep in? It was a perfect moment to explore the various sleeping postures. “Indeed, the way we sleep is a very personal thing. It’s quite difficult to change it,” he began.
Aside from the health aspect of his response, one particular piece of information stood out: the exacerbation of facial wrinkles. Yes, there’s indeed a specific posture that aggravates this issue. It’s also considered the worst among the four positions. “It’s important to know that the worst position to sleep in is on your stomach. When you sleep on your stomach, you increase friction on your face, and thus potentially wrinkles,” explained the doctor. Now that we know, it seems quite obvious! Who hasn’t woken up from a nap with pillow marks freshly imprinted on their face? Imagine that happening throughout the night, for 7 to 8 hours if you adhere to the recommended sleep duration, without changing positions.
Of course, this isn’t a severe consequence, thankfully. However, it’s crucial to note that beyond the friction, the expert warns that sleeping on your stomach can twist your neck, shift your spine, and may increase the risk of developing a corneal condition known as keratoconus.
So, to protect both your health and your skin, the best position to sleep is on your side, specifically on the right side! This position is particularly beneficial for the heart, located on the left, as it experiences less pressure due to gravity. So, how will you sleep tonight?
