Dining out can often become a source of stress when you’re watching your weight. Dr. Jean-Michel Cohen reveals a simple rule to avoid dietary mishaps.
When the goal is to shed some pounds, the initial instinct might be to overhaul everything, including your social life. You might start by turning down a restaurant invitation, then a birthday dinner, and eventually, a lunch with friends. Saying “No thanks, I’m on a diet” becomes almost a reflex. Over time, eating out becomes rare and any external dining experience can lead to anxiety.
In his latest book, “Finally, Know How to Lose Weight,” nutrition expert Dr. Jean-Michel Cohen discusses how this behavior is one of the most common mistakes people make when trying to lose weight. According to him, distancing oneself from social life can actually have the opposite effect of what is intended. Rejecting invitations and adhering to a strict regimen creates frustration. In the long run, this frustration can lead to giving in to temptations more easily or quitting the diet altogether.
Dr. Cohen believes that the key is to continue living normally while adopting a few simple habits. Going to a restaurant shouldn’t be a moment of panic or an opportunity for uncontrolled indulgence. Often, just one easy-to-remember rule is enough to curb excesses without feeling completely deprived.
His advice is straightforward: at a restaurant, choose either an appetizer plus a main course, or a main course plus dessert, but never all three. This strategy allows you to enjoy the meal and maintain the social and pleasurable aspects of dining while avoiding an overload of calories. A full meal with an appetizer, main course, and dessert typically contains far more food than our bodies actually need. By eliminating just one element of the trio, maintaining balance becomes much easier.
The nutritionist also recommends planning ahead a bit. If dinner at a restaurant is on the evening’s agenda, it might be wise to have a lighter lunch that day. Reviewing the menu in advance can also help in making a thoughtful choice rather than a hasty decision when presented with the menu. This bit of preparation prevents impulsive choices and helps fully enjoy the dining experience.
Ultimately, as Dr. Cohen points out, sustainable weight loss is not about strict prohibitions but about realistic habits that can be maintained over the long term. Continuing to enjoy meals with loved ones while following a few simple guidelines is often much more effective than isolating yourself. A diet that accommodates social interactions is also much more likely to last.
