Low in fat and high in protein… To enjoy without guilt, nutritionist Dr. Jean-Michel Cohen suggests trying this cheese.
Cheese is a valuable source of protein and calcium, both crucial for the body. The issue? Cheese isn’t exactly a light food. Many cheeses are high in fat, which can quickly add up in calories. Fond of the creamy texture of burrata? It comes at a cost: about 30 grams of fat and up to 400 calories per 100 grams. Mozzarella (around 300 kcal) and feta (260 kcal) are not much less fatty. So, what cheese should you add to your salads? To get a good dose of protein without the heaviness, nutritionist Jean-Michel Cohen recommends a very specific type of cheese. It is extremely high in protein and contains only 90-100 kcal per 100 grams!
Lately, it’s been all over the internet. And for a good reason: this cheese is as healthy as it is tasty. People are spreading it on their toast, adding it to salads, and using it as a base for gluten-free protein wraps. It’s a fresh cheese with a very mild milky taste and a slightly grainy texture, somewhere between brousse and ricotta. Nutritionally, it offers several benefits: “It’s low in calories, low in fat, and contains interesting nutrients like calcium and vitamin B,” points out Jean-Michel Cohen. But what really sets it apart is its high protein content: “It contains up to 12 grams of protein per 100 grams, which is more than skyr! Skyr doesn’t even reach 10 grams,” the nutritionist notes.
He’s talking about cottage cheese, a cheese made from semi-skimmed or skimmed milk that is drained without being pressed, giving it a somewhat lumpy texture, explains the nutrition expert. You can find it in the dairy section of major supermarkets or at organic stores. The only downside? Its slightly high price, according to some internet users. However, some overcome this by making it themselves. Indeed, as shown in this video, cottage cheese can be easily made at home with milk and a bit of vinegar!
As a result, for satisfying salads that are rich in protein and much lighter than those with burrata or feta, cottage cheese checks all the boxes. Low in calories, nourishing, and easy to incorporate into daily meals, it allows you to indulge without overloading on nutrition. And for those still hesitant about the price, the homemade version offers a simple and economical alternative. This allows you to rethink your salads in a smarter way, without compromising on taste.
