Watch Out! This Cocktail Packs Three Times More Calories Than Champagne!

While chips might be a guilty pleasure at social gatherings, certain drinks can also pack on the pounds—especially this one, which has three times the calories of a glass of champagne…

Every Friday evening follows the same pattern: you and your coworkers gather for a drink right after work to unwind from a busy week and kick off the weekend. Your usual spot? The chic lounge bar next to your office. The draw? Not just the vibe, but also the happy hour discount on all cocktails—20% off from 5 to 7 PM. Just make sure you toast on time, that’s all…

Of course, moderation is key. Overindulging is never healthy. You know that. When you’re the designated driver, you stick to nibbling snacks with a mocktail. But when you’re walking home, you indulge in sampling the alcoholic cocktails, with a particular fondness for the mojito, which sweeps you away to Caribbean beaches in just a few sips.

For those new to mixology, let’s clarify that the mojito is a classic Cuban drink made with rum, mint leaves, and lime, traditionally topped off with crushed ice and sparkling water. The catch? Caught up in its exotic charm, we often overlook that it’s a real “sugar bomb,” as dietitian-nutritionist Keren Guedj points out in her Instagram post. According to her, the equation is simple: “mojito = sugar syrup + brown sugar + mint + dark rum + lime + sparkling water + crushed ice”. The combination of sweeteners, along with the calories from the ethanol in the rum, skyrockets the energy count. A bar-made glass might contain about 250 kcal! “Drink two, and you’re already at 500 calories just from beverages,” the expert emphasizes. In contrast, a glass of dry champagne, which contains almost no sugars, has only about 90 kcal—nearly three times less.

But if you truly prefer palm trees over bubbles, why not just opt for a virgin mojito? Without the rum, you’ll cut back to around thirty calories, and at least you won’t have to worry about any tipsiness…
