Driver Habits and the Inevitable Change
As soon as they get into their cars, numerous drivers perform the same rituals: adjusting the seat, spritzing some spray, plugging in their smartphone. Others automatically adjust their glasses or reach for their seatbelt. These actions have become second nature. Yet, one of these habits is on the brink of extinction, especially among those driving older, less technologically advanced vehicles. Modern car models come loaded with features: start assist, electric brakes, backup cameras, sensors, parking aids… A central touchscreen controls everything from GPS to climate control and calls. Even steering assistance is becoming common on the roads.
As a result, many old-school practices and devices are becoming obsolete and are set to fade away. Take the traditional car radio, to which many are still fondly attached. It serves as a source for favorite tunes or news updates during commutes. It’s a familiar fixture, easy to use, with buttons well-known to the user. It’s simple, convenient, and does not require a touchscreen or internet connection to function.
The Gradual Disappearance of Traditional Car Radios
Unfortunately, the classic car radio is gradually vanishing. This trend is evident in newer vehicle models like the electric ZOE, Opel Rocks-e, and Citroën Ami. A trend confirmed by the PSA Group we reached out to: “New car models are increasingly replacing traditional car radios with more modern devices, such as touchscreen panels and connected smartphone docks.” According to the French automaker, this shift is driven by several factors, including technology and connectivity, comfort and ergonomics, and safety. “New devices can contribute to safer driving by minimizing distractions. For example, the integration of voice commands allows drivers to operate their devices without taking their eyes off the road.”
Renault echoes this sentiment, as their press service shared with us, “The evolution of displays has transformed how radios are used in cars, shifting from a simple physical radio to a connected and intelligent system. Nowadays, the radio experience is not limited to FM stations but includes a broad selection through digital services and streaming.” The modernized car radio, or Radio 2.0, now offers various connected services depending on the vehicle model: Waze, Google Assistant, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, real-time traffic updates, and even weather forecasts. Clearly, the days of the traditional car radio are numbered!
