Many travelers are unaware that SNCF compensates for more than just delays. Here’s how to assert your rights for this issue that occurs almost all the time.
Annually, millions of passengers board the TGV Inoui and Intercités trains. The train is also a popular mode of transport for summer vacations, but these trips often experience cancellations or delays. If delays exceed 30 minutes, passengers are entitled to a refund through the G30 Guarantee (up to 25%, 50% or 75% of the ticket price depending on the delay duration). However, what many do not realize is that SNCF compensates for more than just delayed departures. They also offer compensation for on-board comfort failures that are completely independent of the schedule.
Indeed, these situations occur more frequently than one might think, yet few people claim a refund simply because they are not aware of it. In fact, the Comfort Guarantee (sometimes referred to as the “Travel Guarantee”) covers several common cabin malfunctions: an out-of-service power outlet, broken air conditioning, or a non-existent Wi-Fi connection. If these advertised amenities fail to work, the traveler can claim compensation in the form of a voucher.
This voucher is equal to 15% of the ticket price, valid for one year on TGV or Intercités journeys within mainland France, which means a 15 euro voucher for a 100 euro train ticket. It can then be used for a future journey. The process is straightforward, but be aware, it must be initiated on board the train. The traveler should report the issue to the train manager or conductor during the journey. The incident is then recorded. A few days later, an email confirms the voucher under ‘My Comfort Guarantee’.
Pay attention to announcements on board: if your outlet or air conditioning isn’t working, do not hesitate to ask for explanations. Learn about the Comfort Guarantee when booking or through the SNCF FAQs. Make sure your email is correctly entered to receive the voucher. Finally, keep your ticket until the final validation. These simple steps enable you to exercise rights that few passengers claim… but which can yield a bit of money that helps offset the cost of your next train journey.
