This past Saturday, Ryan Murphy provided the first glimpse of his eagerly awaited new series, “American Love Story,” which delves into the romance between John F. Kennedy Jr., often seen as a political royal, and his spouse, style icon Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy.
The couple’s untimely demise in a plane crash in 1999 transformed their love story into legendary status, earning them acclaim as the fashion-forward duo of the 1990s. Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s style choices remain influential, prominently featured on inspiration boards even decades later.
Devotees and Critics React
The intense following Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy commands was evident when the newly released promotional footage featuring actors Paul Kelly and Sarah Pidgeon stirred controversy. In the footage, Pidgeon is dressed in a black mockneck sweater, cropped pants, and pointed-toe slingback kitten heels, which provoked immediate scrutiny from fashion aficionados.
While casual observers might not find fault with the Hermès Birkin bag or the stylish leather overcoat and attire sported by Pidgeon, die-hard fans quickly pointed out discrepancies: the character’s hair color was too light, her purse looked too flat, and her iconic tortoise shell headband was nowhere to be seen.
Some fans expressed disappointment that the wardrobe seemed to only superficially echo her minimalist style rather than authentically replicate her actual wardrobe.
Comments on Instagram reflected the disappointment. “1995 styling with 2025 offerings is INSANE work. Back to the drawing board I beg,” lamented one user. Another critiqued, “JFK 10/10 CBK -3000/10,” while a third suggested, “Is it too late to recast Carolyn and hire a wardrobe department that dresses her accurately?? She didn’t wear ill-fitting inexpensive clothes!”
Another disgruntled comment read, “Nooooooo this is 2020s Zara does 90s Prada. CBK deserves better! She was an icon of style.”
A call for expert advice appeared in another comment, “Paging @bradjohns333. They need to hire him as a hair consultant for the show,” referencing Brad Johns, the stylist known for Bessette’s “buttery chunks” hair color.
Style Legacy and Criticism
Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy was celebrated for her sophisticated taste, frequently wearing Prada, Calvin Klein, Yohji Yamamoto, and notably putting Narciso Rodriguez on the map with her beloved 1996 wedding dress. Her role as a publicist for Calvin Klein, where she catered to elite clients, highlighted her expert fashion sense, which continues to be highly celebrated and well-documented.
Fashion experts expressed their displeasure on a Diet Prada post, with celebrity stylists like Erica Cloud declaring, “All of this is a no” and Erin Noël emphasizing, “Carolyn is a style icon and her wardrobe deserves the budget to support this, please make sure it’s perfect!” Lauren Santo Domingo from Moda Operandi also chimed in with a straightforward, “sorry but the wardrobe is wrong.”
To judge the accuracy of the portrayal for themselves, fans will need to wait until Valentine’s Day 2026, when “American Love Story” airs on FX on Hulu. Filming is scheduled to start this week in New York City.
