It has even become a common phrase, here’s why.

This catchphrase has turned into an iconic statement, instantly recognizable, and synonymous with promises of beauty and luxury. Yet, many are unaware of the remarkable, almost unlikely story behind this simple phrase.

In the 1970s, advertising was filled with female stereotypes. But a 23-year-old creative was about to shake things up. Tasked with a campaign for L’Oréal Paris’s Préférence hair color, Ilon Specht crafted a slogan in 1971 that would become legendary. Born from a moment of frustration, it reflected her disdain for the advertising clichés of that time. “I was revolted by that traditional view of women. I refused to write yet another ad about pleasing men. So I just thought: Screw it. And I wrote the copy in five minutes,” she revealed to Le Monde in 2011. You guessed it, it’s the famous slogan “Because I’m worth it.”

The commercial success was immediate. Soon, the tagline was on everyone’s lips. More than just promoting a cosmetic product, the slogan conveyed a new image of beauty: one of empowerment for all women. Embraced for over 50 years by all L’Oréal Paris spokespeople (from Jane Fonda to Eva Longoria, including Isabelle Adjani) and translated into 40 languages, the phrase resonates in the collective imagination as a message of emancipation and self-confidence.

This incredible story is now the subject of a documentary titled The Final Copy of Ilon Specht, available March 8 on Prime Video, which features a moving testimony from Ilon Specht, who passed away in April 2024. “What I found profound, from the moment I spoke to Ilon and her family, was that these words, ‘Because I’m worth it,’ which later became ‘Because you’re worth it,’ — these words spoke to who she was. They were not just a flippant remark,” explains Ben Proudfoot, the director of the documentary, which won the award for Best Short Documentary at the Lunenburg Doc Festival and the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival with this film.

And to think that initially, this slogan was just a simple line scribbled on a piece of paper, intended to persuade… before it went on to conquer the world.
