At the premiere of “Task” in New York City on a recent Thursday evening, the star from “Goonies” was seen wearing a necklace that boldly stated “ADHD.” She took the opportunity to speak with Page Six on the red carpet, openly discussing her condition.
“I was diagnosed with ADHD relatively late in life, like so many others. Finding out was actually a big relief,” shared the 54-year-old actress, noting that she was around 50 when she learned of her diagnosis.
Understanding ADHD
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a developmental disorder marked by a continuous pattern of symptoms such as inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, as outlined by the National Institute of Mental Health.
ADHD is recognized as a “chronic and debilitating disorder” that can affect “many aspects” of an individual’s life.
According to Plimpton, her diagnosis helped clarify many confusing aspects of her life.
“A lot of small things started to click and make sense, things that had previously been puzzling,” she stated, stressing that she feels “not ashamed” and “truly liberated.”
“I’m happy to share my experience with ADHD with everyone,” she continued.
Plimpton’s Current Role and Personal Insights
In her latest role, the Emmy-winning actress returns to television as an FBI supervisor in “Task,” starring opposite Mark Ruffalo.
“She’s the special agent in charge and being a woman, she has had to overcome significant obstacles to reach her position,” Plimpton described. “She’s someone who I believe knows how to navigate through nonsense and handle her responsibilities effectively.”
Plimpton feels a personal connection to her character’s resilience and determination.
She has also been a vocal advocate for abortion rights for many years and remains optimistic despite challenges such as the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
“I never give up hope. That is exactly what they want,” Plimpton remarked. “It’s entirely possible to use the available tools and methods to manage one’s own abortion needs.
“It’s crucial to communicate that mifepristone and misoprostol are still legal and available in this country, and they are a safe and effective means for terminating a pregnancy,” she added.
The TV series “Task” is set to premiere on HBO and HBO Max on September 7.
